Finding your people as a Mum

Finding your people as a Mum

Finding your community as a Mum

In this article we explore why finding your people as a Mum and building that support system is so important for your long-term health and wellbeing.

In the amazing but crazy journey of motherhood, the truth is it certainly takes a village to raise a child. While all the focus often falls on the little ones, the importance of a supportive network for mums is crucial.

Are these my people?

I was fortunate enough to have the option to join a Mothers Group in Sydney which meant being in a room of 35 mothers all with new born babies, all looking a bit lost, tired and trying to feed the baby and wondering what’s going on.

If someone would have said to me that “after you have a baby you’ll be out in a room with 35 other women who you don’t know” I would have said “No Way” (and that’s the polite version!). It turns out that this mothers group gave me connection, community, friends, purpose, guidance, support, and weekly coffee & wine dates.

Fast forward 8 years and I’m still best mates with two of them. We all had so much fun in our mothers’ group and I encourage you to do the same. It’s so important to put yourself out there, be vulnearble and see what connections are made. You might find a life-long friend and if not, you’ll have fun along the way!

Finding your people as a Mum is so important.

Motherhood can be excited, exhausting, and everything in between. It’s a rollercoaster ride of emotions, challenges, and our happiest moments. Yet, it’s easy for mums to feel isolated or overwhelmed. This is where it’s really helpful to have community of Mums beside you. Here are my top reasons why having a community of mums is an absolute must:

  • Understanding you and your feelings: Your mum community understands, they get it! They’re going through the sleepless nights, the nappy changes every 5 minuets, the relationship changes, and challenges. They offer a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on, and words of encouragement when you need them most.
  • Sharing Experiences: There’s a unique bond that forms among mums who are navigating similar stages of parenthood. Whether you’re swapping breastfeeding tips, talking about teething, or celebrating milestones together, sharing these experiences with your mum community makes it feel like a sense of belonging.
  • Practical Support: From meals to babysitting, your mum tribe is there to lend a helping hand in many practical ways. Knowing you have a support system in place can make all the difference.
  • Emotional Well-being: Motherhood can sometimes feel like a hard journey, especially in the age of social media where images can mask the real struggles behind the scenes. Your mum community provides a safe space where you can be vulnerable, express your fears and frustrations, and receive genuine empathy and support without judgment.

How to find your people

So, how do you go about finding your mum tribe? Here are a few tips to help you get started.

  • Join Parenting Groups. Check out your local community, parenting groups, or mothers’ groups. Look for groups that align with your interests and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and strike up conversations with other mums.
  • Attend Parenting Classes or Workshops. From prenatal yoga to outdoor group fitness, swimming, music, parenting classes and workshops offer valuable opportunities to meet other parents who are on a similar journey. Take advantage of these gatherings to connect with like-minded mums and potentially build lasting friendships.
  • Social Media. While social media has its drawbacks, it can also be a powerful tool for connecting with other mums. Join parenting Facebook groups. Just remember to be you and engage and seek out genuine connections.
  • Reach Out to Other Mums. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple “hello” to spark a connection. Whether you’re at the park, the cafe, or a Fitness class, don’t hesitate to start a conversations (as hard as it may be). You never know – your next best friend might be there.

Summary

In the chaos of motherhood, finding your mum tribe can be a lifeline, it certainly was for me. Whether you’re swapping stories over coffee, meeting for a cheeky wine, organising playdates at the park, or simply texting in the night when feeding for moral support, your mum community is there to lift you up, cheer you on, and remind you that you’re never alone on this incredible, crazy journey called motherhood.
