Top 5 Pram and Family Friendly walks in North East Melbourne
There are many pram and family friendly walks in and around Melbourne. This article focusses on the North East of Melbourne around Whitehorse and Maroondah.
Spring is the perfect time to discover the beautiful parks and walking tracks in the Eastern Suburbs. Here are our top 5 family friendly tracks in Mitcham and surrounds. Please remember to wear the appropriate clothing for the weather plus remember to take the snacks and water with you as you venture out.
Ringwood Lake, Maroondah Hwy, Ringwood
Ringwood Lake is an easy 1.3km stroll around the lake with small inlets for the kids to explore, bird watching and a bridge across the middle. This is a perfect resting point for little legs to stop, have a snack and watch the ducks. A fantastic all ages / abilities playground is at the northern end of the lake with toilet facilities. Plenty of cafes nearby.
Schwercolts Cottage, Deep Creek Rd, Mitcham
Schwercolt Cottage is a fantastic starting point for a short stroll, or a longer walk if you desire. Head west to walk along the Koonung Creek Trail. Climb the hill to the top of the Mullum Mullum Tunnel where the kids can play, climb and see great views.
Heading west and then veering off onto the Mullum Mullum track will bring you to Park Rd and picturesque bridge crossings. These first 2 options do have some good hills in them so perfect if you are wanting a bit more exercise, however, there are no cafes or water refill spots after Schwercolt Cottage, so take ALL the snacks (mostly for the children) and water!
Heading east towards Croydon becomes a gravel track after Ringwood. You can veer off to go to Ringwood Lake or continue on. All these options provide an escape from the hustle and bustle of the business of the suburb.
Yarran Dheran Reserve, Ashburton Drive, Mitcham
From the visitors centre stick to the main tracks as there are a few steps on the narrower trails. A hilly walk, but this reserve has so much to explore. Beautiful flora and fauna. Multiple track options. To pick the one best suited for you and your time, head to this handy link.
Dandenong Creek Trail, Vermont and Wantirna
For those who love a longer walk, begin at Abbey Walk, Vermont and head down to the Dandenong Trail. This is a pretty flat trail with a few playgrounds to stop at along the way. Marie Wallace Bayswater Park, aka ‘The Train Park’ is a 6km walk from this point. You can meet the trail at many junctions, so just look for your closest intersecting point and walk from there. The train park is an excellent place to rest, play and enjoy the sun.
Blackburn Lake Sanctuary, Centre Rd, Blackburn
Beginning at The Visitor Centre and Blackburn Lake Sanctury Playspace on Centre Rd, (once you extract your kids from the playground!), head for a lovely 1.75km walk around the lake. There are several smaller trails branching from the main trail you can explore. Some fantastic wildlife viewing spots along the way. Cafes are close by if you need a refresh afterwards.
